art journals online

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

The art world has always been slow to exploit the benefits of internet. Perhaps the ease at which images can circulate in the digital world frightens an art economy more often reliant on the principle of scarcity. Art Journals, however, should migrate quite naturally to the web. To date Freize has been the most satisfying in that regard, providing a tantalising slice of their content online. Recently e-flux has entered the arena with their self-styled ‘e-flux journal‘. It’s designed solely for the web and there are now three issues online. The content is solid – great writers and important essays. Try this by Jan Verwoert writing on Joseph Beuys.

The National Film Board of Canada are building an enormous archive of their films online here. It includes films, series, documentaries and their pioneering animation commissions. NFB are vital in the history of animation and there is, of course, a Scottish connection with the appointment of Norman McLaren in 1941 and the earlier hiring of John Grierson who founded the Nation Film Commission which then morphed into the Board.
