Cinemaattic presents MUJERES : Women in Film

Thu 15 February 2018

Mujeres6 o4pt

Guerrilla film collective Cinemaattic hits once again. In February, they team up with Engender Scotland and CIMA (Asociacion de Mujeres Cineastas - The Spanish Association of Women Filmmakers) to bring a programme of first class short films, all directed by women.

The programme seeks to challenge assumptions about the female point of view, in cinema, and critique notions of universally feminine ways to portray reality - offering women and rural life, love and friendship, brutal women and many other different perspectives of the so called female gaze. There will be panel debates with directors, producers and experts after the films.

FILM PROGRAMME

In CinemaAttic we are a bunch of optimists. We feel very partial to the positive change that is taking place in the global film industry. Long overdue, it finally seems to be entering a new phase where women are not only to become more welcome as creators, but also their input on every level of cinematic story-telling more appreciated. We couldn't be more excited to be part of it, because in order for the female voice to be heard, there should be platforms that amplify it. So prepare for February to be loud and proud for women!

This month we're asking ourselves and you, and everyone else – what is the female side of the story? Is there only one way to tell it? Does it only have to be entirely positive? Our rebel spirit demands to go to the margins and bring up a bunch of questions and offer a variety of options for you, because we don't think there is just one way to express it. And so what you will see in our short film programme this month is many reflections of female gaze, and female voice, and some great female direction. It will be atmospheric, and troublesome and hopeful. It will not be entirely right or entirely wrong, as none of us are! But there will definitely be increased levels of warmth and empathy, tenderness and incredible strength of spirit side by side. There will be pain and there will be love, both maddening. So you are all invited to witness this beautiful roller coaster, share some beers and some opinions.

For those who are interested more in opinions than beers, we have organised a series of panel debates.

PANEL

Once again we will put gender parity in the film industry into comparative perspective, inviting professionals from Spain, Mexico or UK to share good practice and name and shame some of the most urgent actions to be tackled.

Final list of panellists to be announced soon, watch this space!

This film is F-rated. Films are given an F-rating if directed by women, written by women and/or present significant female characters on screen, in their own right. f-rated.org.
