SQIFF Queer Revolution: Carlos Jáuregui - The Unforgettable Fag
Fri 29 September 2017
EPI 003 afnv
A key figure in the gay rights movement of 1980s and 90s South America, Carlos Jáuregui became politicised after witnessing mass demonstrations and early pride marches taking place in France and the United States. Returning home to find street arrests and mass raids on gay nightclubs becoming alarmingly frequent, he grew convinced that visibility and direct, collective action were the only viable means of resistance. Lucas Santa Ana’s fascinating documentary follows Jáuregui’s story, from his becoming the first leader of the pioneering Argentine Homosexuality Community organisation in 1984 to his death from AIDS in 1996.
