Yelling at Stars / Phase Three

Messages have been being sent into space since the 1970’s. As yet nothing has been heard back.

Yelling at Stars is an on going science art project investigating the composition of inter-stellar messages.

After sending a transmission into outer space on 31 May 2008 in Melbourne Australia, the Yelling at Stars team is in Glasgow to present at Less Remote: An Arts And Humanities symposium running parallel to the 2008 Astronautical Congress.

Yelling at Stars/ Phase Three is a performance research installation focused on communication with space.

The Wolf and The Howler: Poetry and poets who play music.
Christopher Twigg, Niall McDevitt, JL Williams, Lee Scrivner and James Byrne (host).

The UK’s leading poetry magazine, The Wolf, presents a reading event that will include leading poets from The Wolf who have been published since the magazine’s inception in 2002. All poets featured on the night have also been published in The Howler, an ‘audiomagazine’ CD of poets who play music. All sets on the night will be comprised of both contemporary poetry and songs, written by the poets.

The Wolf and The Howler recently collaborated in a show at RADA (London) to a sell-out crowd. This event marks the penultimate event on The Wolf tour 2008. Other shows include London and Manchester. The Wolf tour 2007 featured sold out events in Paris, London and Wales.

Copies of The Wolf and The Howler will be for sale at this event.

Anyone subscribing to the magazine between now and the Glasgow event will receive a free copy of The Howler.

Biographical information of participants

James Byrne

is the Editor of The Wolf poetry magazine, which he co-founded in 2002. He has read his poetry in America and across Europe and is currently editing an anthology with Bloodaxe, for poets under 35, entitled

Voice Recognition

: 21 Poets for the 21st Century. He is an active translator and recently translated the Yemeni national anthem. His second poetry collection

Blood/Sugar

will be published in 2009. His first

Passages of Time

was published in 2005.

JL Williams

is a poet and songwriter who lives in Edinburgh and studies on the Creative Writing programme at Glasgow University. She has also studied poetry at Wellesley College in America with Frank Bidart. Since moving to Edinburgh in 2001 she has been active both as a poet and in the performing arts as a director and producer, most recently of the performance art cabaret

Neue Liebe

. She was awarded a grant from the Scottish Arts Council for a poetry collaboration entitled

chiaroscuro pentimenti

and has been published in various magazines, including The Wolf and The Howler.

Niall McDevitt

is a poet, a songwriter and a Blakean. He has recently read poetry for The Wolf in Paris and busked through Europe in his youth. He has played music with Shane McGowan and recently translated poetry from the imprisoned Burmese poet Saw Wai.

Lee Scrivner

is a poet and songwriter and the producer of The Howler CD. Originally from Las Vegas, he played with American band, The Killers and fronted his own band Inviolet Row. He is currently in London as a doctoral candidate researching insomnia in Modern Literature at the London Consortium.

Christopher Twigg

is the lead singer of the band Chicken of the Woods. He is a poet, translator and painter, and has been published in The Wolf for all three creative mediums. He studied painting at the Chelsea School of Art and at Slade. Christopher has published five collections of poems, including

A Cherub that Sees Them in 2003.

Art Internship Opportunity

CCA is offering a six-month arts internship commencing in January 2009.

The successful applicant would help contribute to the day to day running of the venue. It could also involve shadowing members of the staff, assisting with CCA events and exhibitions or carrying out specific projects on your own.

You must be available to work at least 1-2 days per week. Interviews for this Internship will be held in December.

Arts Internship Role Description:
This role is designed to offer an intern insight and experience in art management and administration.

Duties of the Role
In addition to assisting and work-shadowing for events, the role may include assisting with:

general office duties such as opening and distributing daily mail, daily collection, stamping and postage of mail at end of day, receiving and distributing other deliveries
the display and distribution of publicity material and weekly press coverage
mailing out and delivering of flyers and other promotional material
sourcing and updating databases and mailing lists
the preparation and event management duties of CCA events
sourcing and arranging best value travel and accommodation arrangements for artists
attending regular CCA team meetings
any other reasonable duties as requested by the Office and Programme Assistant

Hours Worked
This is a volunteer role for 7 to 14 hours per week over 2 days. A regular weekly pattern to be agreed with the Office and Programme assistant.

Position in the Organisation
Reports to the Office and Programme assistant.

SalaryThis is an unpaid role. Complimentary passes to some CCA events may be provided.

FILM PROGRAMME
Our film programmes navigate the multiple ways in which filmmakers and artists have addressed the dilemmas and possibilities of sound and image, from optical printing and syneasthesia, to complex discontinuities between what we see and what we hear. It’s not all just fancy theory: mostly it’s just incredible films, new ways of looking…

Location, Location, Location
Experience a sense of being in the world, in a specific space and time. Including Jeanne Liotta’s recordings of the ionosphere and Walter Ruttman’s radical 35mm precursor to musique concrète.

Word Associations
Discontinuity between narration, text and image. Including Manual Saiz’s employment of John Malkovich’s Spanish dubbing double and Peter Rose’s absurdly hilarious concrete poetry subtitling chaos.

About Face
Human subjects are the focus for sound and image construction. Including masterpieces of experimental film: Paul Sharits’ deeply empathetic interpretation of epilepsy and Peter Kubelka’s Webern inspired abstract portrait of Arnulf Rainer.

Sight and Synch
Sound and image slipping out of synch and into discord, including a very special version of Hollis Frampton’s masterful (nostalgia), with a live narration by Michael Snow at the London screening.

Ken Jacobs & Eric La Casa
Ken Jacobs is the father of film-as-performance and one of the USA’s leading visual artists. His pulsing and intensely detailed Nervous Magic Lantern performances create flickering and abstract 3D tricks of the eye, which he calls ‘movement without motion’. It’s a celestial spectacle grounded by sound artist Eric La Casa’s manipulated recordings of everyday locations: lift shafts, ventilation ducts, car parks.

Andrew Lampert’s quasi-theatrical multiple-projector pieces deliver a kind of maverick dose of controlled chaos and play with the relationship between performers, art and audiences. Prepare to have your expectations confounded, to feel a little uneasy maybe, to laugh.

Bruce McClure turns projectors into instruments; he doesn’t project film, he misuses it. His bastardised 16mm projectors transform B&W loops into a thrumming riot of perceptual phenomenon in colour, motion and sound. Noise music for the eyes.

Paul Sharits’ incredible Shutter Interface is an expanded cinema piece which creates a series of machinegun bursts of chromatic relationships and visual harmonics in an overwhelming montage, intended as "a 3D metaphor of the space of the brain in an epileptic state, brought under control and harmonized."

Using eight projectors, Metamkine manipulate and combine beams of multiple images, glimpses of old films, abstract images, often developed, solarised and burnt as they pass through the projector, in the midst of an electro-acoustic sound field of tape loops, analogue synthesizers and amplified objects. What’s not to love?

Kjell Bjørgeengen, Keith Rowe & Philipp Waschmann create an immersive environment in which sound is looped through oscillators, violin, a radio, guitar pick-ups and specially constructed video amps to create dense flickering images and colours that strobe and confuse the eye. Not for the faint-hearted.

In Greg Pope’s Light Trap film loops are abraded with sandpaper and manhandled by gem polishing drills as they pass through projectors in each corner of the room. Out of a dark haze, shafts of lights emerge, as the emulsion is scratched from the surface of the film. Simultaneously, out of the black silence, noise and audible scratches bloom into a bright drone. It’s not really an installation, or like a normal performance, it’s just an experience of real beauty.

Having met at a Earl Brothers gig in 2007, this band feature Graham MacIver on guitar, Rob Welsh on mandolin, Howie Haubold on double bass, Sam Mcbride on banjo and Sara Ann Cull on fiddle. Their sound is described as Bluegrass Hillbilly and promises to get you in the party mood this festive season.

Acting Up! Drama Sessions for Children and Young People

With the exception of the school holidays, CCA offers extremely competitively priced and excellent drama classes every Saturday for kids taken by accomplished writer and actor Clare Hemphill and her team of energetic assistants! There is also an excellent annual show for each age-group, featuring the childrens' own ideas which are recorded onto DVD as a permanent keep-sake.

The first class of the day is at 11am for ages 5-11, lasts an hour and costs £48 for an 8 week block. New children are welcome to pay-as-you-go to begin with for a months trial to see if they like it, and please note there is also a pay-as-you-go facility in any of the classes as a private arrangement for genuine financial difficulty. There are currently a few spaces available in this class.

The second class at 12.30pm is a very small half hour class for children with special needs - specifically communication difficulties. We currently have a small amount of funding for this class from the District Council.

The ever popular 1pm class currently has a small waiting list, but please note the best way into it is through the 11am feeder class!

There is now a new teenage class at 2.30pm - 4pm for children from 12 to 18yrs. We currently have a few spaces left in this class especially for boys! It costs £52 for an 8 week block but a pay-as-you-go £6 weekly trial price is available to see if you like it.

All CCA classes are exciting, fun and innovative, working on the children's self esteem and confidence as well as their creativity and acting ability. It is also a wonderful place to meet new friends and have fun. Give your child an affordable but educational weekly treat!
