A man and a woman stood behind a frame of some kind. The scene is dark, illuminated by a light box the man holds.

A Picture to Remember/Фото на пам'ять (Olga Chernykh, 2023, Ukraine)

UK premiere; part of the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA)

In A Picture to Remember (Фото на пам’ять) (2023), the war is narrated through the voices of three generations of women: a grandmother living in occupied Donbass, a mother studying parasites one floor above a morgue in Kyiv, and a daughter trying to make sense of reality through a camera lens.

Short: In the Noise of the Downpour (dir. Oleksandr Stupak)

This is an experimental and poetic contemplation of life through the prism of war. It is a premonition of global world changes... and a hope for the sanity of humanity. It is a parable about man in nature and nature in man, about cycles, beginning and end - the path to eternity. Autumn is heading towards winter, and we are so eager for light.

The 2024 edition of Samizdat is supported by Screen Scotland’s National Lottery Film Festival and Screening Fund and Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, awarding funds from Screen Scotland and National Lottery funding from the BFI.
