Composer/percussionist Susie Ibarra creates live and immersive music that explores rhythm, indigenous practices and interaction with cities and the natural world. Her early work in the New York free jazz scene with the likes of John Zorn and William Parker clearly set out her precocious talents and polyrhythmic interests, but with her own releases like 2004’s Folklorico Ibarra opened up the true extent of her interests and musical journey.
A total collaborator across art forms, science and the vagaries of the natural world, Ibarra’s music explores a lot of similar interests at the heart of Counterflows itself; specifically how tradition and folklore can inform and nourish contemporary experimental practice. As a teacher, performer and advocate for human rights at the Centre For Advancement of Public Action, Susie Ibarra’s art fully embraces the notions of art in the community.
