British Art Show 7
In the Days of the Comet
Fri 27 May — Sun 21 August 2011
In the Days of the Comet
Taking place simultaneously across three of Glasgow’s key contemporary arts venues – Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and Tramway - British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet features work by 39 of the most exciting artists working in the UK today. Nine of these artists have a special relationship with Glasgow, being based or having trained here.
The exhibition takes as its motif the idea of the comet as a harbinger of change, a measure of time and marker of historical recurrence. Besides reflecting these and other cosmological concepts, the works propose alternative ways of thinking about the ‘here and now’.
Each venue features art work in a range of media from sculpture to photography, painting to performance, drawing to film and video. Selected to complement the unique architectural character of each location, from CCA’s white cube boxes, to GoMA’s ornate, grand hall and Tramway’s huge industrial volumes, each work highlights the ways in which artists conjure histories – distant or near, longingly imagined or all too real – to illuminate our present moment.
Curated by Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton, British Art Show 7 is an exhibition which unfolds over time as well as location, with Glasgow premiering a number of works new to the show. These include a drawing by Charles Avery at GoMA, a performance by Roger Hiorns especially for Tramway and the UK premiere of The Otolith Group’s Hydra Decapita at CCA.
Widely recognised as the most ambitious and influential exhibition of contemporary art in the UK, British Art Show is organised by Hayward touring and has taken place every five years since 1979. Visiting four cities over a period of a year, this is the first time since 1990 that the exhibition comes to Glasgow.
Accompanying the exhibition is a full programme of artist talks, tours, seminars, and family events across all three venues.
