Come and join our next regular Contact Improvisation Jam!

Jam community members Tsoi Huen and Julienne Restall will co-lead a warm-up guiding you through both individual and collective exploration. The session will begin with individual explorations, utilising visual and sensory imagery to inspire new possibilities within your body. Then, we will transition to a collective experience, drawing on devising methods and applying them to a CI environment where everyone can expand their movement vocabulary.

Contact Improvisation explores the possibilities for movement with a partner or a group. It uses a natural flow of weight, momentum, as well as more subtle connections through touch and the other senses. The form encourages groundedness, listening to one’s own body and other bodies, while connecting to the physical environment in relation to gravity.

A ‘jam’ is a collective improvisation of creative movement, voice or musical instruments. All levels of experience are welcome. An open space to improvise, using tools built up in classes/workshops and our individual practices. They are places to play, connect, express ourselves and explore through movement. People may dance by themselves, in duet, in larger groups, or simply observe.

Participants assume all risks involved in participating in a session with The Glasgow Jam, and release The Glasgow Jam from any liability for their safety. In a jam, participants are responsible for themselves at all times. Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult.

Facilitators’ Bio

TSOI HUEN WONG is a physical performer, dance/theatre maker and facilitator. Her practice centres around movement, as she believes that bodies are the most authentic medium which allows performers to ignite their art with aliveness and presence. She enjoys moving with other people, and exploring how choreography can compose a range of creativity and imagination. Tsoi Huen aspires to develop her movement practice to encompass a wide spectrum of performing arts, spanning from dance, theatre, performance art to participatory context.

JULIENNE RESTALL is an emerging artist whose practice lies within visual and movement-based theatre, and often intersects with video art. She currently co-runs CI LABS with Tsoi Huen Wong, a skill-sharing artist cooperative with a particular focus on Contact Improvisation and devising techniques. Julienne regularly runs “visual dance” and somatic strands of the workshops held by the company. Her artistic practice is situated in devised, ensemble stage pieces with a focus on voicing true experiences or finding innovative ways of retelling important stories. Music, object and choreography, as well as the curation of space and world-building are the foundations of the work Julienne makes.
