The Glasgow Jam Contact Improvisation Workshop with Nerea Gurrutxaga Arruti

Sat 20 January 2018

Nerea f5e4

In this workshop we will explore touch as a way of inviting others into our movement trajectory, and look at how the whole body can use touch to interact with a group while moving.

This workshop will begin with a warm up intended to bring the group together through exercises that focus on activating the space and bodies collectively. This will lead into the introduction of different forms and textures of touch, proposing a series of tasks to be practiced together with the whole group. Slowly translating this group dance into our individual bodies, we aim to direct our attention towards finding the information given internally and letting it travel into the space. Finally we bring the touch back as a form of inviting, exploring the question of how touch can allow us to invite different bodies to move together - using as many body parts, surfaces and curves of the body as possible. This last part will move into an open dance session.

Followed by a screening of ‘Fall After Newton’ (1987) :
“A sweeping look at 11 years of practice of Contact Improvisation by Nancy Stark Smith and Steve Paxton. The progression from its beginnings in 1972 through successive years of performances up to 1983 shows one strand of the development of this multifaceted duet dance form”
