Creative Lab Residency

Joanna Peace

Mon 4 May — Fri 29 May 2015

Joanna Peace

Joanna Peace has left 'Microphones', a short text piece produced during her time in the Creative Lab, in Aye Aye Books, edition of 50.

Joanna is developing a text-based performance throughout 2015 across various venues. The Creative Lab residency will see her experiment with sound and visuals for this work, in which she sends a lone female protagonist on a pilgrimage with various psychic, nostalgic, geological and fantastical detours.

This work began at the end of 2014 during a residency in CCA organised by MAP. It was triggered by a visit to Rocamadour in South West France, a pilgrimage site along the famous route to Santiago de Compostela. Set in dramatic limestone cliffs, the ‘Grand Escalier’ of 216 fossil-filled steps leads up to the chapel of the Black Madonna, which is hung with model ships left by grateful survivors. This site, dense in both religious and geological finds, became the starting point for an imagined landscape, and by setting her protagonist off to walk there Joanna hopes to discover why and what we might seek to believe, to remember, and to forget.

Joanna will be inviting others to join her in the Creative Lab including members of The Writing Group, artists who meet monthly to support the creation of writing in myriad forms.

Joanna is an artist and writer based in Glasgow. Recent projects include ‘Lover of Rock’ published by MAP; HOUSE VISIT, a residency in The Hague funded by the a-n New Collaborations Bursary; a paper on the medieval hermit Suster Bertken delivered at the interdisciplinary symposium ‘Buildings & the Body’ at Southampton University; and an installation included in ‘?!*’, a festival celebrating the written and spoken word held at The Pipe Factory, Glasgow. Joanna has taught at the Glasgow School of Art and delivered workshops for Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Depot Arts and Project Ability.
