Creative Lab Residency
Marco Giordano
Mon 28 August — Fri 22 September 2017
Marco Giordano
During his residency, Marco Giordano will develop a new body of work investigating the fine line between ownership and authorship. From Friday 1 September, the residency space will be open to the public as part of the creative process.
Marco Giordano' s new project in the Creative Lab, Coordinating Conjunctions, invites the general public to take part in this residency. Using the lab as open studio, everyone is welcome to join in designing a large scale banner using airtex fabric. Borrowing the conjunctions for, and, nor, or, yet, so, as a base for the design, anyone can be involved by making a simple sketch of the banner using a collage technique, or can work on creating the full banner along with Marco.
A coordinating conjunction is the part of speech that connects two or more items such as words and phrase or clauses, and so the process of making banners together produces a connection between different people, aiming to draw a line between speech and community. All the work produced will be hung and shown in a closing event. Please feel free to contact Marco directly in regards to any questions about the banner making on marcgiorda@hotmail.com.
Marco Giordano works across different media such as painting, sculpture, site specific installation and collaborative community projects. Utilising ephemera from pop culture and the everyday, Giordano makes different combinations of objects and materials, playing with their visual and literal meaning in order to change their function and alter the way we perceive them: "By changing context, introducing these items first into the studio and then placing them in the exhibition space, I disrupt the objects' original meaning thus creating new perspectives and forms of understanding."
Giordano treats his subject matter with the same regard, no matter where they originate from, isolating snapshots and snippets from the Internet's constant flow of text and imagery, and conferring them with an importance and respect to be recorded for posterity, a treatment that was perhaps not necessarily intended for them in the first place.
Marco Giordano will also include in his residency the use of social collaborative projects, after he came across a website called Deviant Art, dedicated to fan art, on which people upload drawings they make of their idols. He takes great interest in this form of art, performed by amateurs, outsiders from the contemporary art scene, a form of art that is often excluded from being showcased.
