Creative Lab Residency
Mary Simpson
Mon 7 July — Fri 1 August 2014
Mary Simpson
During her Creative Lab Residency at CCA, Mary Simpson will research a new film collaboration with Glasgow-based artist Lucy Skaer. Both Simpson and Skaer’s practices share an interest in examining such concepts as patterns of economic circulation and language used as substitute to reveal cultural, historic and economic distortion; as well as examining regional impacts on landscape, architecture and folk iconographies. Their upcoming film project will focus on common issues of the ecological and economic impact of the oil industry on communities in Aberdeenshire and the North Slope of Alaska.
Mary Simpson was born in Anchorage, Alaska and currently lives in New York. She received an MFA from Columbia University and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. Her work has shown at On Stellar Rays, New York; Bortolami Gallery, New York; Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York; Almine Rech, Brussels; Hilary Crisp, London; Seattle Art
Museum, WA; Boise Art Museum, ID. Films screenings, projects and lectures include The Artists Institute, New York; The Kitchen, New York; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle WA; CAM2 Madrid, Spain. She teaches at Cooper Union and Columbia University.
