Creative Lab Residency
Sora Park
Mon 18 July — Sun 31 July 2016
Sora Park
Since 2013, Sora Park has been researching a subculture of Kizomba social dancers around the world.
Kizomba – a partner social dance originating from Angola – has experienced an explosive popularity within Latin dancing subcultures recently, and it has become the centre of many contentious discussions.
Park's research, based heavily on her ardent participation within the dancing subculture, focuses on passion as a cultural commodity; ownership based on race; creation of national identity through exported cultural products; and heteronormative behaviours on a dance floor.
During the Creative Lab Residency, Park will continue her research on verbal communication on a social dancing dance floor, where non-verbal communication between the participants is heavily emphasised and practiced.
She will give a lecture performance on Saturday 30 July at 5pm.
