JOURNEY TO THE EAST (JTTE) - Scotland’s premiere performance art and contemporary culture festival which centres queer, PoC and East Asian artists and artforms - returns to Glasgow from 22-30 September!
For the opening keynote talk of Journey to the East festival 2023, Matt Mullican presents a lecture on his work. Over the past 30 years Mullican has explored hypnosis as a means to create performative documentations that excavate the subconscious mind and reach into the collective unconscious looking at systems of signification, knowledge-formation, language, and meaning through diverse mediums including installation, drawing, sculpture, and performance. Exploring psychoses as a model of heightened and altered states of awareness, the alter-ego of the artist with no age, gender, or name, only called “That Person,” has been a means to connect with ‘that world’ in sharing his influential psychic/aesthetic research and multidisciplinary artistic practice. In this lecture at CCA Glasgow, scheduled prior to his performance under hypnosis at Tramway on Saturday 23rd September, Matt Mullican will present his “theory of the five worlds” as well as discuss recurring themes in his work including hypnosis, performance with everyday objects, and the unconscious as a means to interrogate reality.
