Running to the Sky (Jo Kuluk)
Mirlan Abdykalykov’s immensely endearing coming-of-age drama is told with charm, sensitivity, a sharp understanding of human nature and a wonderful central performance from Temirlan Asankadyrov as 12-year-old Jekshen. In a beautiful mountain village in Kyrgyzstan, Jekshen is fiercely loyal to a father brought low by drink and divorce. Schoolmates make fun of the situation. Kindly strangers offer their support. Jekshen can run faster than anyone else in school and his ability might be the key to the family’s salvation, especially given the prizes in some local races.
