The Twentieth Century
Director Matthew Rankin’s award-winning debut feature is a faux biopic that charts the roller coaster ascent of famed Canadian Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, to power. Divided into several chapters, we follow the not-so-innocent King as he navigates through an absurd political hellscape, all the while trying to stave off his unsavory urges in a bid to get to the top. Stylistically soaked in a retro aesthetic, The Twentieth Century is a colourised acid trip that plunges the viewer into an entirely different universe that stands out as some of the most hilarious and visually inventive filmmaking you will have ever seen.
