Two Soft Things, Two Hard Things
An Inuit woman profiled in the film, Jesse Mike explains that “two soft things rubbing against each other” is the literal translation of an Inuktitut term for lesbian relationships, while “two hard things rubbing against each other” signifies gay male sexuality. This documentary offers fascinating insight into attitudes to queer sexuality in contemporary Inuit society and traces the violent legacy of colonialism. Many of the people interviewed argue that the adoption of Christianity and devaluing of traditional ways has led to a loss of an earlier embracing of polygamy and same sex relationships.
