Horror Minus Horror is a two-night film series that tests and expands the boundaries of the genre: a conversation between films that employ horror’s aesthetic conventions without being considered horror, and films that explore horror’s themes without using those aesthetics.
This April, join us for screenings of Stephen Karam’s The Humans and Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years: a family drama set within a sinister frame, and a ghost story without the ghost.
To ensure that Horror Minus Horror is accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstances, our tickets are offered on a sliding scale.
The Humans
In The Humans, writer-director Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play, three generations of a family gather in a dilapidated, barely furnished flat to celebrate Thanksgiving. Their bonds are stretched as tensions build, secrets are unearthed and mysterious sounds bleed through the walls.
Eerie, astute and quietly devastating, The Humans stars Richard Jenkins, Amy Schumer, Steven Yeun, Beanie Feldstein, Jayne Houdyshell and June Squibb.
‘Karam treats his family drama like it’s a horror, a quotidian spiral shrouded in an ever-creeping, and ever-unknowable, darkness … The Humans is going to haunt me and it’s going to haunt you too.’ Benjamin Lee, The Guardian
