Body Remedy
I DO NOTHING, with Ranjana Thapalyal and Dr Diljeet Kaur Bhachu
Tue 23 July 2024
Ranjana Thapalyal and Dr Diljeet Kaur Bhachu
Contemplate the profound impact of the self in shaping our interactions and perceptions. This reflective workshop delves into South Asian and African philosophical traditions to question the origins and effects of the 'I'. Through visualisation, deep listening, and simple movements, participants will examine the dynamic between stillness and action, considering its significance in personal and broader social contexts.
Ranjana Thapalyal is an inter-disciplinary artist, writer and educator based in Glasgow, Scotland. Alongside a long career in lecturing and academic research, her visual art practice has taken several distinct forms. These include ceramic sculpture, painting, mixed media ephemeral assemblages and collaborative performance. A constant thread has been an intuitive leaning towards art practice as philosophical reflection on the nature of time, and the metaphysical self. In performance, such as her ongoing project Sound-Seed, these interests are expressed as experiments in spoken text, movement, stillness and sound as forms of language in dialogue with one another.
Dr Diljeet Kaur Bhachu is a Glasgow-based musician. Working primarily with flutes, she creates “ethereal, almost extraterrestrial lullabies” (God is in the TV zine) with soft, ambient loops and effects. Diljeet is also interested in the natural breath, natural voice, and rethinking instrumental music practice. Recently, Diljeet has been reconnecting with singing, specifically in the Hindustani vocal tradition.
This movement session is open level for black people and people of colour who identify as women and/or non-binary.
