“Each story is at once a fragment and a whole; a whole within a whole.” — Trinh T. Minh Ha, Woman, Native, Other (1989)
Social dreaming is a reflective practice in which people share their dreams and associated thoughts, layering up a collaborative collage of images, ideas, cultural references and feelings. At the heart of social dreaming is the idea that our dreams may speak of the social contexts we are embedded in - our groups, our communities, our cultures - as much as they may speak of the inner life of a single dreamer.
You do not have to be a vivid dreamer to attend this workshop. While the session will involve sharing literal dreams, it will also be a dream-like space in which associations including memories, thoughts and feelings can also act as ‘dreams’.
In the first hour of the workshop, we will share dreams and associations. We will then spend 20 minutes reflecting on the session. After this, there will be an additional 10 minutes in which Mina will be available to talk through any difficult feelings that may have been brought up by the workshop if needed.
The workshop is led by Mina Heydari-Waite, a British-Iranian artist, researcher and facilitator based in Glasgow. She practices in a range of contexts; working collaboratively with communities as well as creating works across mediums (installation, sculpture, video and sound) for gallery settings. Mina seeks to work with a pluralised understanding of the world that foregrounds marginalised ways of knowing and thinking. Recent work has explored the generative social potential of dreamwork, exploring how it might create possibilities for new thought about our shared contexts and issues concerning us collectively.
If there is anything we can do to make this workshop more accessible to you or if you need any clarification on what to expect, please get in touch at valiulytemilda@gmail.com.

Collective Dreaming
Collective Dreaming is a research and events programme that weaves together Scottish, Ukrainian and Lithuanian moving images and thoughts in search of connection and collective liberation. In solidarity against all forms of colonial violence, the programme aims to question imperial, capitalist, and patriarchal systems of power to make sense of our current reality. In this context, we look at art as a method to open ourselves up to new possibilities of thinking, hoping, dreaming and collaborating.
