Rachel Levine: Soft Chaos

Fri 20 February — Sat 14 March 2015

Rachel Levine

For Soft Chaos, her solo show at Intermedia Gallery, Rachel Levine will present an installation of new sculptural works.

The title of the exhibition is derived from a longer quote in Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille’s book The Semiotics of Passions: From States of Affairs to States of Feeling: ‘the soft chaos of non-articulated tensions.’

Focusing on the intermediate or affective states of emotion and response, these new works seek to explore moments of ‘small crisis’ or anxiety, within the observer as well as the objects themselves.

The works in the exhibition will present objects that, having been removed from their normal state of size, dimension, materiality, functionality and ‘internal logic systems,’ are thrown into a state of anxiety, a ‘soft chaos’ of value, purpose and utility, allowing for an interrogation into materiality and matter.

The installation of these works, purposely reserved, will seek to focus on the small change or shift, the moment in-between observing, the cognitive process and understanding.

Rachel Levine graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Since then she has exhibited and participated in residencies in Scotland as well as internationally.

Levine’s work concerns sculpture as both method of research and as medium. Levine was selected by The Skinny and CCA as their award winner at RSA New Contemporaries 2014.
