Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival is proud to screen Landscapes of Resistance (Pejzaži otpora) as part of its inaugural edition in 2022. This stellar antifascist documentary film has previously been featured in the 2021 programmes of Viennale, BFI London Film Festival, and International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Landscapes of Resistance was directed by Marta Popivoda, a queer Serbian woman living outside of her home country who returns to Serbia to retrace her grandmother’s experience during the Nazi occupation. Alongside featuring intimate interviews with her grandmother Sofia, the film revisits the now-serene landscapes upon which Sofia’s experiences during the war are inscribed, including the locations where she had met her comrades in the Yugoslavian resistance movement and endured unimaginable horrors at the Auschwitz-Bikernhau concentration camp.
This film can also be watched online (Sep 27 - Oct 13) thanks to our partner Klassiki.
Samizdat is supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, and funded by Screen Scotland and National Lottery funding from the BFI. It is jointly funded by the European Cultural Foundation (Culture of Solidarity Fund — Ukraine Special Edition).
