Migration Beyond Metaphor

Writer and gardener Claire Ratinon has written about the ‘dehumanizing language of invasion’ used to describe both human and plant migrations. Rejecting this damaging vocabulary, many writers set out to reclaim the landscapes and language from which they’ve historically been excluded. Exploring themes of grief and growth, and considering how we might reconceive of belonging and borders, these authors engage with nature and ecology as more than linguistic tool, simple metaphor or motif.
