How does the language of seed dispersal relate to writing about lived experiences of migration?
Writer and gardener Claire Ratinon has written about the ‘dehumanizing language of invasion’ used to describe both human and plant migrations. Rejecting this damaging vocabulary, many writers set out to reclaim the landscapes and language from which they’ve historically been excluded. Exploring themes of grief and growth, and considering how we might reconceive of belonging and borders, these authors engage with nature and ecology as more than linguistic tool, simple metaphor or motif.
Join a new reading group led by Glasgow Seed Library's 2024 researcher-in-residence Tilly Nevin. Discussing work by writers such as Nina Mingya Powles, Jessica J Lee, Victoria Adukwei Bulley and Thea Lenarduzzi, we will consider questions of migration, language and gender. All welcome!
