Originating in Japan, Butoh is a radical form of body performance dubbed the 'Dance of Darkness' which seeks to excavate the potential of our straying selves through transformational dance. The signature image of Butoh dancers painted white, moving with hyper-controlled slowness and often grotesquely, belies an art-form of diverse and intense exploration into what it means to be human and live in a body. Butoh is a dance of burning questions rather than easy answers.
Performers at Moving Bodies include renowned Butoh artist Ken Mai (Japan), whose new solo Dhyana is a study of Hindu meditation practices focussing on “the mysticism of life, death, eroticism and the compassion of love.” Festival co-curator Paul Michael Henry is a Glaswegian dancer whose performance Laughter at Being Crushed explores the poetry of Rumi and William Blake through the lens of Butoh. Elsewhere Natsuko Kono (Japan), Ambra G. Bergamasco (Ireland) and Yuri Dini (Italy) offer unique perspectives on this moving and still evolving form.
Workshops are open to all and suitable for artists, dancers, musicians, actors and anyone physically curious.
