Nationtime

1972, a congregation of Black political minds, entertainers, activists and elected officials come together in Gary, Indiana for the National Black Political Convention. In an impassioned cry for unity, what’s on the agenda is demands for reparations, improvements to voting rights, and decreased military and police funding, amongst many others. Capturing the event in full flow is legendary documentary filmmaker William Greaves (Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One).

Deemed too radical for public consumption, for almost 50 years Greaves’ documentary was only available in a truncated form before being fully restored in 2020. Narrated by Sidney Poitier, and featuring speeches from key figures of the Black Liberation movement, such as Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King and Harry Belafonte, as well as music by Issac Hayes, Nationtime remains as searing and relevant today as a document of Black resilience and its demands to make the world a fairer place.
