Now You See Us: In the Hartwood

Following her performance of In the Hartwood storyteller Jane Mather will host a discussion and creative workshop in which audience members can reflect on the themes explored in the performance.

In the Hartwood
is a modern-day faerie tale about a pauper’s cemetery in in Hartwood Hospital, a decommissioned psychiatric hospital near Shotts, told through the eyes of a Glasgow dreamer and two of the 1,255 people interred – who would have remained invisible had it not been for the people who care for the graves today and the quick thinking of a member of nursing staff when the hospital closed. A storytelling adventure from storyteller Jane Mather and harpist Heather Yule.

Originally commissioned for the 2023 Scottish International Storytelling Festival, this SMHAF performance of In the Hartwood will be followed by a discussion and workshop with Jane Mather, in which audience members can reflect on the themes explored in the performance.

This event is part of the Now You See Us programme, a two-day showcase of new artist commissions, creative workshops, film screenings and vital discussions responding to this year’s Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival theme, In/Visible.
