Still from La Chimera

We’ve teamed up with MUBI to give The Skinny readers a second chance to see one of the films of the year on the big screen: Alice Rohrwacher’s ethereal graverobbing saga La Chimera.

Josh O’Connor stars as Arthur, a crumpled British archaeologist who leads a group of grave-robbing Italians who make their living by haphazardly plundering priceless artefacts from Etruscan graves and selling them on to a mysterious middleman.

O’Connor is having a bit of a year. He was excellent in the propulsive tennis drama Challengers and he’s even better here in a more melancholy register, as a man haunted by his past love and his confusion at using his passion for Etruscan culture for ill-gotten gains.

La Chimera
is the fourth feature film by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher – following celebrated films like Happy as Lazzaro and The Wonders – and she’s proving herself one of the most original voices in European filmmaking. La Chimera doesn’t look or feel like any other film released in 2024: it’s a hauntingly beautiful work filled with visual invention and a cockahoop humanism all its own.

If you missed La Chimera when it was in cinemas earlier this year, or just want to see this modern masterpiece on the big screen again, make sure to make it along to our free screenings at the CCA in Glasgow.
