Thu 20 March 2025

Glasgow Seed Library

Join us with Seed Librarian, Hamshya Rajkumar to explore the history & political nature of seeds.

The evening's event facilitated by the Food & Climate Action Project & Glasgow Seed Library will include a film screening of Seeds of Freedom, community meal & talk around seed sovereignty, led by Hamshya Rajkumar.

Participants will learn about the impacts of patenting seeds by large corporations, and the importance of seed saving in the current context. They will be encouraged to engage in group discussion around the topic and will take home some heritage variety bean seeds to grow at home (suitable for windowsill growing!).

All audiences welcome, no prior knowledge required.

Film Screening & Meal:

Seeds of Freedom is a landmark film narrated by Jeremy Irons. The story of seed has become one of loss, control, dependence and debt. It’s been written by those who want to make vast profit from our food system, no matter what the true cost. It’s time to change the story.

Produced by The Gaia Foundation and the African Biodiversity Network, in collaboration with MELCA Ethiopia, Navdanya International and GRAIN.

Produced & Directed by Jess Phillimore

Camera - Jess Phillimore, Jason Taylor, Damian Prestidge.

About the organisers

Food & Climate Action is a project delivered by Glasgow Community Food Network, in partnership with six organisations in Glasgow and funded by The National Lottery. Our food system and the climate crisis are inextricably linked. Not only is our Western industrial food system one of the main drivers of climate change, but a changing climate will also impact access and availability of food in Scotland, particularly for migrant and low income communities. We need a more resilient, climate-friendly and just food system in which everyone has access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food. Come and learn some of the skills to build more resilient, local food systems in our communities.

Glasgow Seed Library is a collection of seeds and a community of growers. The library stocks organic and open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds for everyone to borrow, grow and save. By learning to save and share seed locally, we can nurture unique varieties and adapt our plants to a changing Scottish climate.
