Are you interested in learning about soil ecology? Want to learn how to feed your soil to boost healthy plants and support biodiversity above and below the ground?

Join a Tending to Soil workshop in the beautiful Lambhill Stables community garden to explore the soil food web, and get to grips with the principles of soil health.

Peek at soil microbes under the microscope, study different composting methods and get hands on with bokashi fermentation, a Japanese method of adding fermented food scraps to the soil to boost fertility. We will also sow some green manures, crops sown specifically to improve the soil.

Please note the workshop will take place mostly outdoors so come prepared for unpredictable Scottish weather: bring warm and waterproof layers, sunscreen and sturdy footwear for rough ground.

About the series

Tending to… is an ongoing series of workshops, designed to build people’s skills and confidence in growing from seed, and offer cheap, accessible and earth-friendly ways to care for seed crops in urban spaces. Organised by Glasgow Seed Library and hosted by community gardens around the city.

About the organisers

Glasgow Seed Library is a collection of seeds and a community of growers. The library stocks organic and open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds for everyone to borrow, grow and save. Throughout the year, Glasgow Seed Library organises free workshops, talks and events around seed skills, community growing and earth care.

Lambhill Stables
, on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, is an inspiring community hub improving the north of the city for all. With a bike hub, cafe, kitchen and a community garden that is open to everyone, they provide opportunities for learning new skills, taking part in creative and social activities, and caring for the environment.

Accessibility

Lambhill Stables has a sloping community garden, with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces. Some workshop tasks can be made accessible to people with a range of mobilities, including wheelchair users. Please email louise@cca-glasgow.com in advance to let us know of any access needs and we will work on adapting the workshop content.
