Barry Keoghan in Bird
It’s been eight long years since Andrea Arnold’s last fiction film, American Honey, and that’s too long by half. She returns this November with the dreamy coming-of-age drama Bird. It follows the adventures of Bailey, an imaginative 12-year-old who lives in a North Kent squat with her irresponsible father, Bug (Barry Keoghan), and older brother, Hunter (Jason Buda).
Bailey spends her days exploring the hardscrabble world around her, much of which she captures on her mobile phone to watch back in her bedroom. With adolescence fast approaching and her father soon to marry his girlfriend, Kayleigh (Frankie Box), a woman Bailey doesn’t much care for, her life is soon to change forever, but things start to look up when the mysterious figure of Bird (played by Franz Rogowski) enters her life.
Arnold's regular cinematographer Robbie Ryan returns too with his ever-vibrant camerawork, and together they've created another lyrical work spilling over with visual poetry among hard lives. Bird was much acclaimed when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this summer, with Arnold winning the Carrosse d'Or (or the Golden Coach Award).
We’re very excited to be previewing this wonderful new film, for free, at CCA in Glasgow on 13 November, as part of The CineSkinny Film Club with MUBI.
