‘Time Travel is just another word for Spatial Desire’ is a writing workshop focused on Utopian theory and collective dreaming as a methodology against cultural isolationism.

During the workshop, participants will be asked to consider the speculative possibilities of islanded places – such places that are inaccessible via physical isolation, environmental destruction, or their imagined/historical nature – to consider the near future.

In using isolated environments as a focal point, participants will work through creative writing prompts designed to encourage the use of speculative fiction as a tool against hopelessness.

I can only think of the future, the place where we should refute all that we are living, negate and tear up all that we are living, I am always living in the future.” – Dionne Brand.

The workshop is led by Maya Uppal, a poet and workshop facilitator, based in Glasgow. Their current research is a form of creative Art History aimed at exploring political and national identities through different temporal lenses by re-imagining the contexts of archived stories and objects. Their poetry can be found in SPAM, MUCK, Mellom Press, Gutter Magazine, David Dale Gallery and Brilliant Vibrating Interface.

Collective Dreaming

Collective Dreaming is a research and events programme that weaves together Scottish, Ukrainian and Lithuanian moving images and thoughts in search of connection and collective liberation. In solidarity against all forms of colonial violence, the programme aims to question imperial, capitalist, and patriarchal systems of power to make sense of our current reality. In this context, we look at art as a method to open ourselves up to new possibilities of thinking, hoping, dreaming and collaborating.
