Màiri Gillies and Robbie Synge will discuss their work and its context, strongly rooted in their experiences of living in different rural landscapes with distinct and overlapping issues. Their varied approaches share a key interest around wellbeing and its reflection through people, habitats and landscapes.
Taking the physical custom of walks from each of their homes, this conversation will move and meander across diverse terrains, encountering other living beings and geologies, finding points of reference for shared and contrasting perspectives and drawing upon the artists’ associated experiments and observations through images and film.
Weaving film and still images throughout, the walk pulls at threads of indigenous knowledge, environmental restoration and small to grand strategies concerning these places for future generations. What is the nature of participation in developing these future narratives and which voices and approaches are heard?
Màiri Gillies is a visual artist living in Ùig on the isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. Màiri's creative practice draws on her background of sculpture, horticulture and education and often explores place based and site specific Gaelic ways of seeing.
Robbie Synge is an artist and choreographer based in Strathspey. He focuses on local projects based on bodily connections, working alone and with others of diverse ages and backgrounds.
