Umwelt theory states that our world is not one unified, objectively observable whole but made up of the subjective impressions of its innumerable, diverse inhabitants. A hummingbird’s sensory world would look very different from a human’s – to say nothing of that of an artificial intelligence. This new collaborative work from architect and visual artist Laura Mannelli and Belgium-born, Glasgow-based Sonia Killmann riffs on umwelt theory to depict a world comprised of overlapping sense-impressions, contrasting machinic visuals with a restless, teeming, organic soundtrack.
A Cryptic Commission 2024. Supported by Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg and Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Developed at Cove Park.
Running time: 30 mins
